Project description
Research project manager: dr hab. Karolina Krasuska
E-mail: karolinakrasuska@uw.edu.pl
Financing: National Science Center
Project type: PRELUDIUM BIS
Duration: from 1st October 2023 to 30th September 2027
Project Summary:
The project “Affective Poetics: Manifestos and Women's Rhetorical Strategies, 1970-2020” focuses on the ways in which modes of anger and affective poetics are used in American women’s manifestos to shape the genre’s political potential for mobilizing resistance. The project answers the pressing need to engage critically with engaged women’s writing shaped by the recent publication of a number of anthologies collecting women’s rhetoric. Thanks to its focus on the analysis of affective poetics in radical women’s manifestos “Affective Poetics: Manifestos and Women's Rhetorical Strategies, 1970-2020” pioneers the next step in canonizing engaged women’s writing. The aim of the project is twofold. Firstly, it is to conceptualize a new genealogy of women's manifestos: one that emphasizes the ongoing radical potential of women’s rhetoric at a moment conventionally thought to be dominated by neoliberal feminism. The project exposes the entanglement of contemporary women’s manifestos with texts produced in the 1970s and 1980s, the so-called second wave of feminism. Two time frames are used not in terms of comparison or linear chronology, but rather in the sense of genealogy and the question of re-reading and appropriation of existing texts by contemporary thinkers. Secondly, “Affective Poetics: Manifestos and Women's Rhetorical Strategies, 1970-2020” examines manifesto as a genre, paying particular attention to its use of affect and rage in building persuasive rhetoric, capable of mobilizing women’s resistance. This research simultaneously fulfills a social and an academic objective: making heard women’s voices which were previously dismissed, mocked or marginalized, and expanding the theoretical toolbox for the analysis of radical women’s writing.
