European Environmental Economics and Policy

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in European Environmental Economics and Policy (M3EP) is a two-year, second-cycle (Master’s) joint degree programme delivered by five 4EU+ Alliance universities: University of Copenhagen, Heidelberg University, University of Milan, Charles University in Prague, and University of Warsaw.

M3EP equips students with a strong foundation in both environmental economics and environmental policy and politics, preparing them to engage with complex sustainability challenges, particularly those related to the green transition at the European and global levels. The curriculum blends economic analysis with political frameworks and practical policy skills.

Structure of the programme:

• Year 1: Conducted at the University of Copenhagen, focusing on core concepts in environmental economics and policy.
• Year 2: Students choose a specialisation at one of the partner universities, such as Economics of Green and Just Transition in Warsaw or other tracks in Heidelberg, Milan, or Prague.

The programme aims to develop professionals capable of designing, evaluating and implementing effective environmental policy solutions, and prepares students for diverse career paths in public institutions, private organisations, research, or further academic study.

Admission rules

The programme is offered by the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw as part of a consortium of European universities within the European University Alliance 4EU+ – Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in European Environmental Economics and Policy (M3EP).

The first year of studies is carried out at the University of Copenhagen. At the application stage, the candidate chooses the university at which they will study in the second year: Heidelberg University, University of Milan, Charles University in Prague, or the University of Warsaw.

1) Admission requirements

Applicants may apply if they:

1. hold a Bachelor’s degree in specified fields from one of the consortium universities – the list of eligible fields is available at:

or hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in another field and have completed at least 60 ECTS credits in economics and/or political science during their studies

or in justified cases, the Admissions Committee may accept applicants who, after an individual academic assessment, are deemed to possess educational qualifications equivalent to those listed above.

2. provide proof of proficiency in the English language – according to the guidelines available on the Programme website.

2) Admission procedure

Applications for admission must be submitted online via the University of Copenhagen application portal. Applicants are required to create an account in the application system and upload all required documents.

The University of Copenhagen conducts the initial selection based on compliance with formal requirements.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, the following criteria will be taken into account:

• Total number of ECTS credits in the subjects listed below*
• Grades obtained in the subjects listed below*

*Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, Public Economics, Environmental Economics, Resource Economics, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations.

The admission process is conducted in two rounds:

• Round I for applicants from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland
• Round II for applicants from the EU/EEA/Switzerland

For applicants applying for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, separate rules defined by the European Commission apply.
