The main element of education at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences (SDNSP) is the implementation of an individual PhD project in one of the scientific disciplines (Astronomy, Computer Science, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences) that are covered by the school, under supervision of a faculty member chosen by the doctoral student.

Education at SDNSP includes courses in the form of specialization and monographic lectures, workshops, seminars, two-day symposiums as well as courses and trainings to improve the skills of doctoral students in teaching.

The graduate of the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences has a highly specialized education acquired under the supervision of leading scientists and is prepared to undertake independent scientific and teaching activities at universities and research institutes. In addition, the graduate will have gained extensive knowledge beyond the discipline in which he/she prepared his doctoral dissertation, as well as skills in conducting scientific and teaching activities

Education program

The education lasts 4 years. It includes obligatory classes (no more than 300 hours in total during the whole period of education) and the implementation of an individual research program, carried out under the supervision of a supervisor.

Project description

The main scientific goal of the project is to define the objectives of sRNA OmrA activity in Yersinia enterocolitica strains with a low (strain Ye9, bioserotype 2/O:9) and high (strain 8081, bioserotype 1B/O:8) degree of virulence. The genes whose expression will be tested were selected as a result of in silico analyzes. Among them there are those coding important virulence factors of these enteropathogens. Information on the change in gene expression profile under the influence of OmrA will be verified by RT-qPCR and Northern blot as well as by testing the activity of the constructed translational fusions with the gfp reporter gene. In addition, EMSA tests will be performed to assess the formation and migration rate of potential OmrA/mRNA complexes in the presence or absence of the Hfq chaperone. Molecular tests will be enriched with the phenotypic characteristics of Y. enterocolitica strains differing in OmrA activity, i.e. the assessment of mobility, microcolony and biofilm formation, adhesion/invasion capacity in the epithelial cell line, and the degree of insecticidal activity.

  • completed master's studies in the field of biology, biotechnology or related;
  • knowledge of the mechanisms of regulation of gene expression in bacteria, especially post-transcriptional regulation by sRNA in the context of pathogenesis and adaptation to various stress conditions;
  • good command of spoken and written English;
  • diligence, accuracy, very good organization of work;
  • communicativeness and the ability to work in a team;
  • strong motivation to work and willingness to carry out research as part of doctoral studies;
  • knowledge of techniques in the field of microbiology and/or molecular biology, i.e. work with bacterial DNA/RNA, studies of bacteria phenotypic properties (e.g. analysis of bacterial biofilm and/or bacterial survival tests in tissue cultures);
  • knowledge of the RT-qPCR method will be an additional advantage.
